# Revenue Recovery

> Recover revenue lost to failed payments and abandoned checkouts with Dodo Payments' automatic retries, dunning emails, and abandoned cart recovery.

<Info>
  Dodo Payments recovers revenue from failed subscription renewals and abandoned checkouts with three automatic tools, plus a manual retry that you send when you choose. The automatic tools need no integration work. Each one is off by default, and you turn it on in **Settings → Recovery**.

## Which Tool Recovers What

Each tool covers a different failure. Find the scenario in the first column:

| Scenario | Recovery tool | How it recovers |
| - | - | - |
| Subscription **renewal** fails on a **soft decline** (insufficient funds, network error) | [Payment Retries](/features/recovery/payment-retries) | Re-charges the saved payment method on a back-off schedule |
| Subscription **renewal** fails and you want to re-attempt **right now** (for example, the customer confirms they added funds) | [Manual Retry](/features/recovery/manual-retry) | Charges the saved payment method once, when you ask, independent of the automatic schedule |
| Subscription **renewal** fails on a **hard decline** (expired or invalid card) | [Subscription Dunning](/features/recovery/subscription-dunning) | Emails the customer to update their payment method |
| Customer **cancels** a subscription from the Customer Portal | [Subscription Dunning](/features/recovery/subscription-dunning) | Emails the customer to re-purchase |
| Checkout for a **one-time purchase** or a **new subscription** fails or is abandoned | [Abandoned Cart Recovery](/features/recovery/abandoned-cart-recovery) | Emails the customer to complete the purchase |

## How They Work Together

For subscriptions, **Payment Retries** and **Dunning** run side by side. When a renewal fails, retries re-charge the saved payment method in the background while dunning emails ask the customer to update it. Retries recover soft declines with no customer action. Dunning recovers the payments that need a new payment method, such as hard declines. When either one settles the renewal, the subscription returns to `active` and the other stops. Turn on both to cover both kinds of failure.

To read failure codes and decide when a retry is worthwhile, see [Handle Payment Failures](/developer-resources/handle-payment-failures).

## Analytics

Track recovery performance under **Analytics → Recovery** in your dashboard. The tab shows recovered revenue and the recovery rate, with separate metrics for payment retries, dunning, and abandoned cart recovery. See [Analytics & Reporting](/features/analytics-and-reporting) for every metric.
